In the opening Super 4 game of the Asia Cup on Saturday, Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by four wickets by maintaining composure during yet another difficult run chase. The islanders’ minor but significant contributions helped them win the match as they successfully chased down the 176-run mark in 19.1 overs. This was Sharjah’s highest run-chase in a T20I. Rashid Khan, the opposition’s best bowler, was faced by Kusal Mendis (36 off 19 balls), who continued where he had left off against Bangladesh the day before by launching him for two consecutive sixes as 17 runs were scored in that over during the Powerplay.

Danuska Gunathilaka (33 off 20 balls) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (31 off 14 balls), however, turned the course of the game with a 32 run stand in just 2.3 overs. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who scored 84 and helped Afghanistan reach 175-6 in 20 overs, was outclassed by Rajapaksa’s late blitz. After being given the opportunity to bat first, Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran, who both scored 40 runs, put on a crucial second-wicket stand of 93 runs, but Sri Lanka responded late to lower the opposition total. However, towards the end of Afghanistan’s innings, Zadran and Rashid Khan (9) both received a couple hard hits that helped bring the total near to 180.
