Erling Haaland had to be the culprit. In a 2-1 victory in the Champions League on Wednesday over Borussia Dortmund, the German team he left in the offseason, Haaland’s acrobatic volley with the outside of his left foot completed Manchester City’s late comeback. After taking the lead after 79 minutes and keeping City unusually quiet, Dortmund was finally defeated when John Stones, a centre back who was playing at right back when he should have been playing centre back, smashed a swerving shot high into the net from outside the area. Even more remarkable was the victory for Haaland. Joao Cancelo crossed the ball with the outside of his right foot from the left, and Haaland leaped high to deflect it into the goal at shoulder height. The Norwegian striker now has six straight goals for City in all competitions and 13 in eight games overall. It was his 26th goal in 21 outings in the Champions League. In its most recent attempt to capture its first Champions League championship, City opened Group G with two straight victories.
The Bundesliga’s juggernauts opened the scoring in the second half thanks to a record-breaking goal by Jude Bellingham after Pep Guardiola’s team was unable to overcome them.
Prior to John Stones’ strike from the edge of the box, City had not put Alexander Meyer to the test, and the goalkeeper will be unhappy with his placement.
When Cancelo later sent a beautiful ball into the box with the outside of his foot and Haaland was there, Dortmund couldn’t hold on for a point.
The Norwegian, who had scarcely breathed all evening, soared into the air and expertly guided the ball over Meyer.
What an ending. Not just the two injury-time goals in the final four minutes that Manchester City scored to win this Champions League match when it seemed impossible for them to do so, but also the astonishing strike’s balletic but terrible beauty.
